What exactly is a thriller story?

It's true - thrillers ARE a broad category. They can range from paranormal, horror, psychological, medical, action, or courtroom (just to name a few). But there is one thing that they all have in common: The ability to keep the reader on the edge of their seat waiting to see what will happen next. Emplying has a range of books that writers can access for research.

Create A Suspense

That means that you'll need to create a good amount of suspense no matter which direction you take your story, and the easiest way to do that is to take your protagonist and make him sweat. Each time the reader thinks that the hero has overcome the obstacles thrown at him, you need to up the stakes.

But, you also need to let him win some battles as well. Many writers say that you need to think of your scenes like a roller coaster. One is up, the next is down and so on. The reason for this is that you need to break the tension every now and then, before upping the stakes again. Your reader needs that break to catch their breath before you take them through another twist.
